According to a survey, consumer confidence will prove essential for the mass adoption of autonomous vehicle technology over the next few years.
2020 will be the moment in which, according to the experts of the sector, the first launches of autonomous vehicles will begin to be seen. However, the full impact of this technology on society and the economy will not begin to emerge until about 2025, and the key will be the degree of acceptance it has among consumers. For now, this leaves much to be desired.
And, as revealed by Gartner from a survey of more than 1,500 people, 55% of them would not be mounted in a completely autonomous vehicle. Of course, this figure rises to 71% when it comes to partially autonomous vehicles. Concerns about technology failures and safety are key reasons why many consumers are cautious. “The fear that autonomous vehicles will be confused in unexpected situations, safety concerns about equipment and system failures and vehicle and system safety are the main concerns about the use of fully autonomous vehicles, explains Mike Ramsey, director of research at Gartner.
For this reason, according to the consultancy, dozens of companies are currently developing sensors and other technologies necessary to enable vehicles to detect and understand their surroundings. In fact, by mid-2017, more than 46 companies are developing artificial intelligence software to control a stand-alone vehicle and make it work. And, as Ramsey points out, “autonomous driving technology will transform the automotive industry, changing the way vehicles are built, operated, sold, used and maintained.”
On the other hand, respondents also agree that fully autonomous vehicles offer many advantages such as improved fuel economy and a reduced number and severity of accidents; as well as provide a safe transportation option when drivers are tired and you can use the travel time for entertainment and work.
