Movistar has been the technological partner of La Vuelta ciclista a España 2017 with the aim of improving the performance of cyclists thanks to data analysis.

Luca, Telefónica’s big data services and business data analytics division  , is already a member of the Movistar Team thanks to the data analysis project carried out during the Vuelta Ciclista a España with the aim of improving the performance of the athletes.

Each of the riders has a computer that collects all data from both training and competitions thanks to the sensors that the bikes have installed. In this way, not only can the performance of the athlete be observed, but also the work of the technicians and the medical team can be facilitated.

“The aim is to help cyclists make better real-time decisions in the race, ” said Elena Gil, CEO of Telefónica’s Luca. “If the rider knows his performance in detail, he can improve it.”

In addition, the project also aims to analyze each of the stages to see the impact of the returnand for this has been supported by three sources of data: the mobility of people around the stages, television audiences and the conversation generated in social networks.

“In analyzing the results of the different stages we have been able to observe the great impact that this sport has,” said Pedro Alarcón, Luca’s data scientist . “We have seen how people from different localities have moved to small municipalities where the stage started or how millions of tweets have been generated on La Vuelta.”

In addition, the LUCA team will make available to the organization of La Vuelta all the data generated in each of the stages.
