The new Nokia tablet multiplies by three the performance of the base stations while reducing the size of the antennas and their energy consumption.

The manufacturers of network infrastructure are already putting all the meat in the barbecue with the imminent arrival of the fifth generation of 5G mobile communications .

On this occasion, Nokia has advanced some details of what it will show during the next Mobile World Congress 2018 to be held in Barcelona from February 26 to March 1.

Firstly, the ReefShark chipset , designed for the management and transmission of data in future 5G networks but which is already beginning to be tested by 30 operators and whose mass deployment will take place from the third quarter of this same year.

This silicon chip has been designed with an architecture that seeks to revolutionize mobile communications thanks to the fact that it is capable of multiplying by three the performance of current base stations , but also halving the size of MIMO antennas and their energy consumption. 64 percent .

ReefShark is implemented in the radiofrequency units and can be delivered to operators as plug-ins of the existing infrastructure. In this way they can reduce the investment considerably by not having to replace it. Its implementation allows moving from the current 25 Gbps of each module, Nokia’s MIMO networks to 84 Gbps . But that’s not all, since these modules can be mounted in array to get the 6 Tbps.

However, the goal is to be able to meet the requirements of the next generation of mobile communications, especially with the massive arrival of technologies based on Artificial Intelligence and IoT.

“With ReefShark, Nokia has achieved a clear competitive advantage. Its combination of power, intelligence and efficiency allows it to position itself at the center of the development of 5G networks that is getting closer, “says Henri Tervonen, CTO of Nokia Mobile Networks and president of the R & D foundation.

In parallel, Nokia has also announced the implementation of the network architecture Future X 5G , designed to facilitate cost reduction and increased performance, this time thanks to the combination of the 5G New Radio solution, the network core and SDN Anyhaul solutions .

As a whole, ReefShark and Future X will help to market the 5G networks of the future , characterized by automation and scalability never seen before. The company estimates that the total cost of ownership can be reduced by up to 30 percent.

“Thanks to our” Future X 5G “portfolio, we are opening the intelligence and network data to our customers, which will allow us to jointly program and adapt the automated learning and automation that runs on our new technology. The Future X architecture, invented thanks to the research of our Nokia Bell Labs laboratories, has managed to combine the existing knowledge in Nokia about IP networks, optical networks, RF and software with the innovative reference design developed by Nokia. We hope to offer unprecedented possibilities that allow our customers to transform their service offerings for 5G “, explains Marc Rouanne, president of Nokia Mobile Networks .

All these advances will be shown by the multinational during the next MWC. Silicon will be there covering all these advances and also at stand 7M13 .
