The first pilots related to telephone 5G will be deployed in Segovia and Talavera de la Reina, with partners such as Nokia and Ericsson.

Telefónica has given its particular kick-off to the deployments related to the fifth generation of mobile communications, 5G. This important project has been called 5G Technological Cities , with Segovia and Talavera de la Reina being chosen for it.

As explained during the presentation Luis Miguel Gilpérez, president of Telefónica Spain , is a set of long-term deployments that will last at least three years, until 2020, when the 5G standard is consolidated in the telecommunications industry. Not in vain, at the moment there are no official guidelines by the agencies for such development. However, Telefónica and its technology partners ensure that in these early stages everything will be governed by existing standards (from previous generations such as 3GPP) and there will be no proprietary developments.

These two cities will become living laboratories of the 5G . Contrary to what has happened on previous occasions, the use cases will mark the necessary technological development: “First we will study the cases that society demands the most and then we will apply the ideal technology for it,” said Joaquín Mata, Operations Director, Network and IT of Telefónica Spain .

The spectrum of cases of uses that will be carried out is high: from traditional wireless connectivity for inhabitants to connected cars , drones , Industry 4.0 , etc. It is even planned to carry out a project never seen before and related to mixed reality : In Talavera de la Reina will be staged the first play that combines real actors with virtual. ” La Celestina ” will adapt to this format that promises to change the experience of the spectators.

To achieve the advances, Telefónica together with its partners will use three facilitators mainly: high speed (with rates starting from 1 Gbps up to 10 Gbps in 2020), high capacity(where the number of connected devices can be multiplied by 100) and the low latency .

On this occasion, the technological partners chosen by Telefónica to carry out the road to the 5G are Nokia in Segovia and Ericsson in Talavera de la Reina .
