The fundamental change in Bitcoin Gold is the choice of a different hash algorithm that makes proof of work more difficult for ASICs. This is achieved when a hash algorithm requires more memory (RAM) to complete.

The current chain of Bitcoin blocks driven by ASICs uses a hash algorithm known as SHA-256 for its work test. The founders of Bitcoin Gold have proposed changing that algorithm to another known as  Equihash . Equihash was developed as an algorithm resistant to ASIC processing, and has already seen the success of other cryptocurrencies, the most famous of which is Zcash.

Zcash was the first open cryptocurrency with no permissions that can completely protect the privacy of transactions using zero-knowledge cryptography.

Zcash’s initial protocol was launched as “Zerocash” in 2014. Zcash was developed through a collaboration between the original Zerocoin researchers at John Hopkins University and a group of cryptographers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Technion Institute of Technology of Israel and Tel. University of Aviv.

Zcash uses Equihash, which is an asymmetric hard work test (PoW) algorithm. It is based on the high requirements of RAM to bottle the generation of tests, making the development of the application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) unfeasible, like Ethereum.

Zcash is considered by the majority in the cryptocurrency community as a truly fungible currency. Like Bitcoin, Zcash has a fixed total supply of 21 million units.

ZenCash (ZEN)

Although  ZenCash  was recently introduced to the world, this cryptocurrency has already received a lot of attention. ZenCash is a direct bifurcation of ZClassic (which in turn is a fork of Zcash) focused on privacy. One feature that makes ZenCash attractive to people is the way it offers a secure communication protocol known as ZenTalk. Users can exchange short messages through this network, all of which are driven by blockchain technology.

ZenCash has a  maximum coin supply of 21 million , which is the same as Bitcoin. The governance of this project will be done through a structure of the Decentralized Autonomous Organization, which is financed by a part of the mining rewards. The DAO will also finance future developments and seek additional partnerships.

LBRY  is a platform based on blockchain that provides users with a large library and decentralized market. LBRY plans to offer a worldwide library of multimedia content, from books and movies to songs and video games; at the same time it offers the option of digital marketing of those same works. All controlled only by users: they are the ones who will decide if their content will have a value and what value it will have, only they will be able to modify it or eliminate it, and, the best part, is that only they will collect the profits. Without intermediaries.

Respecting the independent spirit of the project, LBRY developed its own cryptocurrency : the  LBRY Credits  (LBC). With them you can both acquire content and participate in an auction of names and exchange them for another currency in the respective exchange houses.

MonaCoin (MONA)

Monacoin (MONA) is a decentralized, bifurcated Open Source cryptocurrency from Litecoin and launched in January 2014 in Japan. In contrast to his father, the total supply of coins is established four times that of Litecoin (105 million), while the difficulty of mining is focused on each piece using the difficulty calculation DGW (or “Dark Gravity Wave”). The block time generation of MonaCoin is also much faster than Litecoin. In Litecoin, the generation of block time is 2.5 minutes, while in MonaCoin it is only 1.5.

Launched by the MonaCoin Project, this platform has rapidly gained popularity in the cryptocurrency market, and millions of entrepreneurs, investors and users in general (particularly in Japan) now use this platform to transfer funds.

Vertcoin (VTC)

Vertcoin  is a cryptocurrency peer-to-peer and software project launched through a client on GitHub in January 2014. It is a Bitcoin coin with additional features such as Stealth Address technology   and a Work Test (PoW) function that is resistant to Mining ASICs.

Vertcoin is the first cryptographic currency to develop stealth technology and implement it within the blockchain network. This is considered to be the best solution to ensure the privacy of users in a decentralized public ledger.

The main difference between Bitcoin and Vertcoin is the latter’s resistance to centralized mining and the long-term promise of the Vertcoin developers to keep it that way. Thanks to the ” Adaptive N-Factor ” technology, this coin can be extracted by regular users (through the use of graphic cards) and not by large data centers.

Sibcoin (SIB)

SibCoin or ‘Siberian Chervonets’ (SIB) is a cryptocurrency of Russian origin created in May 2015. According to its own creators, SibCoin has been developed to meet the needs of the Russian-speaking community and in particular to address the need to send remittances between the inhabitants of Russia and Ukraine.

SibCoin uses the source code of the Dash cryptocurrency, and incorporates a series of additional algorithms with encryption technology specially designed by Russian cryptographers.

Contrary to Dash, Sibcoin uses a variation of the X11Gost algorithm that is resistant to mining ASICs. For this reason, Sibcoin extraction is currently only possible with GPUs, which guarantees a greater degree of decentralization.

SibCoin project leader Ivan Rublev has said that the development team is focusing on two specific areas as the cryptocurrency ecosystem evolves. Services based on MasterNode and traditional services (which include exchanges and payment collection services) will be the two main areas of attention for the SibCoin team.

SibCoin is currently available on the ‘YoBit’ and ‘Livecoin’ platforms, and more recently has been added to one of the most reputable trading platforms, Bittrex.

Metaverse (ETP)

Metaverse is a leading public block chain in China. Its main objective is to provide secure and easy-to-use services based on blockchain technology to a wide variety of people, companies and even government institutions.

Metaverse is similar to Ethereum and NEO in that it is an intelligent contract platform. However, unlike Ethereum, one does not need to be familiar with Solidity to be able to use it. Metaverse essentially allows companies to complete a form with what they need and details. It is marketed as 2B2C, where using it can greatly simplify and help in the development process. In essence, Metaverse aspires to be the Chinese substitute of Ethereum, where the intermediaries will be parties whose personal interest lies in the type of transactions that are carried out on the public blockchain.

Ethereum is a rising star in the world of cryptocurrencies. It has quickly become the second largest digital currency in just over two years, with a booming value and boosting the rise of hundreds of new rivals to Bitcoin.

The cryptocurrency of ether has skyrocketed in popularity and price in recent months. Launched in 2015, the value of the ether (ethereum coin) has increased rapidly since the beginning of 2017, with an ether that is now worth more than $ 700.

Ether is the third most valuable form of digital money after bitcoin, with the second highest market value. The technology in which it is run is called ethereum blockchain , which was first described by bitcoin programmer Vitalik Buterin, 19 years old, in 2013.

A Canadian citizen born in Russia, Buterin published his idea for the digital currency in 2013 when he was 19, and went on to configure it in the next two years. Buterin was mathematically gifted from an early age and won a bronze medal at the International Computing Olympiad in 2012.

Buterin conceived the ethereum as an improvement in bitcoin. Like Bitcoin, it is a decentralized payment network, with its own cryptographic currency, which allows the sending of anonymous payments through the Internet without the need of a bank or other third party.

The encrypted transactions are stored in a decentralized ledger, the blockchain, and are visible so that everyone in the network can see it.

Ethash is the working test algorithm used for Ethereum. This encryption technique also allows to extract ethers  using the GPU of a desktop computer . With Bitcoin, it is almost impossible to do this using normal GPUs, since it requires the use of very powerful specific ASICs or processors.

Ethereum Classic (ETC)

Algorithm: Ethash

Starting his life as Ethereum, Ethereum Classic (and his value token, ETC) is the result of a long debate about how cryptocurrencies should handle disagreements within the community and data attacks. That does not mean that in any way it is a lesser entity than Ethereum. On the contrary, the community behind Ethereum Classic seeks to make Ethereum Classic the best cryptocurrency on the market.

Ethereum Classic is an open source, peer-to-peer computing platform, based on the blockchain technology and the original Ethereum code. Like Ethereum, it provides a value token, or “altcoin,” called “classic ether” that is used to pay users for products and services, and as a transaction fee when using decentralized applications and smart contracts.

Ethereum Classic is not a new cryptocurrency, but a division of an existing cryptocurrency, Ethereum. Both chains of blocks are identical in every way until the block 1920000 where the hard-fork was implemented to reintegrate the tokens to the holders of the DAO, which means that all the balances, wallets and transactions that occurred in Ethereum up to the hard -fork are still valid in the blockchain of Ethereum Classic. After the hard-fork, the blockchains were divided into two and acted individually.

Ethereum Classic still offers the same features as Ethereum, such as the  creation and deployment of intelligent contracts and decentralized applications , and has the same specifications, such as average block time, size and reward.

The work test algorithm used is called Ethash (a modified version of the Dagger-Hashimoto algorithm) and involves finding a nonce entry   to the algorithm so that the result is below a certain difficulty threshold.

Ubiq (UBQ)

Algorithm: Ethash

Ubiq  is a decentralized platform that allows the creation and implementation of intelligent contracts and decentralized applications. Built on an improved Ethereum code base, Ubiq’s blockchain acts as a large, globally distributed supercomputer, allowing developers to create decentralized and automated solutions for thousands of tasks that are now performed by third-party intermediaries.

The blockchain Ubiq generates blocks using a work test system with a target average block time of 88 seconds.

The algorithm used for the work test,  Dagger Hashimoto , is the same as that used for Ethereum and Ethereum Classic, however, the longer average block times decrease the growth size of the DAG used to represent the block chain, allowing that low-end video cards with 2GB of RAM can operate in the chain for at least 6 years. In addition, Ubiq integrates a new algorithm of adjustment of difficulty called  Flux , in order to keep block times more consistent in conditions of variable hash rates.

Monero (XMR)

Algorithm: CryptoNight

Monero  is one of the few cryptocurrencies that have not been created using Bitcoin technology. Specifically, it was built on the CryptoNote protocol  , an encryption system that makes transactions not signed by only one person, but by several at the same time. His birth occurred in April 2014 as a fork of Bytecoin, the first cryptocurrency to use the CryptoNote protocol instead of the one used for Bitcoin.

In principle, Monero (XMR) is born with the name of BitMonero, a union between Bitcoin ‘bit’ and, literally, ‘currency’ in the Esperanto language.

After the bifurcation and the name change, the developers undertook  to improve their original code and integrate the CryptoNight algorithm  for mining, where the order of transactions is voted on, new features in the protocol and the fair distribution of money.

Monero emphasizes that its mining algorithm will not allow the centralization of this by large companies, as has happened with Bitcoin, since until now it is not possible to develop ASIC devices for its algorithm.

Another advantage offered by Monero is that it  allows both the use of the GPU and the CPU for coin mining , while in Bitcoin, both the use of the CPU and the GPU is practically useless nowadays.

Bytecoin (BCN)

Algorithm: CryptoNight

Bytecoin  (BCN) is an alternative cryptocurrency launched in 2012 that uses the unique CryptoNight algorithm based on CryptoNote technology. Bytecoin is an open decentralized cryptocurrency, which means that any interested person can join the Bytecoin network and participate in the development of the currency.

Bytecoin allows secure transactions around the world and offers the convenience of instant transactions without charges. This is possible due to the processing of transactions carried out by network users who are rewarded by the network itself. During the processing of transactions, users do not have access to information regarding the sender, receiver or the amount of money transferred.

Like Monero, Bytecoin uses the  CryptoNight algorithm , which is designed to make the CPU and GPU mining approximately equally efficient and at the same time restrict ASIC mining.

Feathercoin (FTC)

Algorithm: NeoScrypt

Feathercoin is a cryptocurrency that was launched as an alternative to the popular bitcoin.

Feathercoin was created around 2013 and remains active despite having a relatively small trading volume. As a litecoin fork, it did not offer much in terms of uniqueness compared to bitcoin and its predecessors based on blockchain and was considered as just one more clone in what quickly became a market flooded with open source altcoins.

Even so, Feathercoin was in the digital monetary space long enough to appear in the main virtual currency exchanges and is still being offered in several until today.

Feathercoin uses the NeoScrypt hash algorithm to solve the aforementioned protected cryptographic blocks, not as complex as the SHA-256 design used by bitcoin but very intensive in the use of the processor. This algorithm was exclusive to feathercoin at one point, but was later adopted by other altcoins who sought to take advantage of its benefits.

As feathercoin uses NeoScrypt, it can be extracted using the processor power of both CPUs and graphics cards (GPUs); being the latter the most efficient.

You can choose to extract with your own existing hardware or a mining equipment built specifically for hashing with NeoScrypt or similar algorithms.
