He believes that blocking or eliminating the “controversial tweets” that these leaders write “would conceal important information that people should be able to see and discuss.”

Like any application with similar characteristics, Twitter has established rules of conduct that users who open an account in said social network must abide by for a respectful coexistence among its members. Some rules that, if violated, can lead to the elimination of content or even the suspension of the accounts themselves.

But should those messages in the form of tweets that are signed by political leaders and that are controversial be eliminated? Do the rules work the same for everyone? Where is the limit of what can and can not be written on Twitter?

The debate has been generated with the use that the American president, Donald Trump, makes of his account in this platform. The latest controversy has to do with a nuclear threat launched last week through a tweet that can still be consulted. Given the criticism received for not deleting it, Twitter has decided to explain its position on leaders and political figures in an official way.

As he has indicated , “blocking a world leader on Twitter or removing their controversial tweets would hide important information that people should be able to see and discuss” Twitter adds that it would not “silence that leader, but it would certainly hinder the necessary discussion about his words and actions”.

Its leaders claim that “Twitter is here to serve and help advance the global public conversation.” Its purpose is that “it is the best place to see and freely discuss all that is important”, helping “our society to progress”. In this context, “elected world leaders play a key role in that conversation because of its enormous impact on our society.”

From Twitter also say that “we review the tweets of leaders within the political context that defines them, and we enforce our rules accordingly .

The social network wanted to clarify that there is no account that can be said that “drives the growth of Twitter” or that “influences these decisions. We work hard to maintain impartiality with the public interest in mind, “says Twitter.
